What IS Balayage??

Balayage pronounced (Baa-lay-ag’e) to put it simply is: hand painted highlights. I think a lot of people have misconceptions on what this is and who should do it. I wanted to take a moment to share some insight and HOPEFULLY, clear up that whole pronunciation thing because DANG y’all! HAHAHA O.K. sorry, but for reals, Biolage is a brand name balayage is the service.

  • What it does: Because it is hand painted, it has a softer effect and a more subtle grow out. Most of my balayage clients only have it redone every 4 months or more. This of course does not apply to those covering grey hair, they will continue to need root color as often and usual. The picture above is a client of mine who had her highlights done about 2 months prior to this picture. I love the soft accents it adds to her style, notice the movement that it creates in the hair overall.

  • Can it be more dramatic? Yes, absolutely! I have other clients who want a bolder look or a very blonde over all effect and it looks incredible! We typically have a soft graduation of light to very light on the ends of the hair. More dramatic looks may require more visits as balayage is a slow lifting process.

Who should NOT get balayage? If you have a lot of red tones in your hair naturally and want a very light ashy result then you may need to look at other options such as foilayage or babylights depending on your desired result. Don’t worry, I will write a blog about those as well, just stay tuned…

Also, if you are wanting to cover greys without root color, balayage will not work for you because, it is very soft of the root area. You will need more coverage such as all over color or full foil highlights and possibly low lights.

That being said, balayage is one of my favorite services to do because it is so natural and beautiful on pretty much everyone! It is a more expensive service because it requires skill, time and creative discretion. Feel free to check out my social media pages for more examples of balayage that I have done on my clients. As always, booking a consultation for services may be in your best interest if you are a new client wanting to find out what is best for you and your hair.
